COMMUNITY INITIATIVES
Academic Sessions – Bridging the gap between geospatial education and the world of work
Academia Sessions ensure universities are kept up to date with geospatial industry trends
Education is vital to growing our society and economy. Esri South Africa recognises this need and is actively involved with various academic institutions to promote spatial capacity building. We provide work-integrated learning opportunities to deserving students. These students are given a chance to visit Esri South Africa’s head office for an information session and hear from industry experts working at the company. The sessions are designed to provide an overview of possible career opportunities and to ensure university students and lecturers, are kept up to date with geospatial industry trends.
Recently the Esri South Africa team hosted an academic session for the University of Johannesburg, Geography Environmental Management and Energy Studies, Faculty of Science. The team shared their wealth of knowledge and experience with the young students by presenting on the following topics:
- SDGs Geospatial monitoring and reporting.
- GIS techniques and environmental planning, focusing on the landcover changes and the effect of floods on the environment; and
- GIS and conservation
